The Kreiskrankenhaus Bergstraße is a general district hospital with seven specialised units and around 800 members of staff. Each year its dedicated staff treat around 12,500 in- and another 20,000 out-patients. The hospital has an affiliation with the Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg and acts as a teaching hospital (Akademisches Lehrkrankenhaus) that will accept German students during their practical year (Praktisches Jahr). Places are available in internal medicine, surgery, gynaecology, orthopaedics and anaesthetics.
Heppenheim is beautifully set on vineyards below the mediaeval Starkenburg castle. It lies at the Bergstraße, an 80 km long ancient trade route that also gave name to the surrounding landscape. The region is known for its mild and sunny climate and early spring.
