The Johanniter Krankenhaus Oberhausen was founded by the protestant Johanniterordern. When it opened its doors in 1895, it had 120 beds. Since the 1940s it has been extended several times. Today it has 346 beds.

The Evangelisches Klinikum Niederrhein and its four locations have an affiliation with the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and act as a teaching hospitals (Akademische Lehrkrankenhäuser) that will accept German students during their practical year (Praktisches Jahr). Places are available in anaesthetics, ophthalmology, gynaecology, neurosurgery, neurology, psychiatry, radiology and urology.
