What began as a hospital for men in 1847 is today a modern district hospital with more than 550 beds and 1,180 members of staff. The city hospitals in Mönchengladbach (Städtische Kliniken Mönchengladbach) – Elisabeth Krankenhaus Rheydt treat around 27,000 in- and around 50,000 out-patients every year. More than 9,300 surgeries (of which 2,000 are out-patient surgeries) are done here in the same time-period. The hospital has an affiliation with the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and acts as a teaching hospital (Akademisches Lehrkrankenhaus) that will accept German students during their practical year (Praktisches Jahr).
