The lutheran hospital Göttingen-Weende is the second largest hospital in Göttingen. It is represented in three locations: Göttingen-Weende, Göttingen/Neu-Mariahilf and Bovenden Lenglern. More than 1,100 members of staff ensure that the approximately 20,000 in- and another 37,500 out-patients receive high quality treatment and care. The hospital has an affiliation with the Georg-August-Universität in Göttingen and acts as a teaching hospital (Akademisches Lehrkrankenhaus) that will accept German students during their practical year (Praktisches Jahr). Places are available in internal medicine, surgery, geriatrics, respiratory medicine, urology, radiology and anaesthetics. It was awarded the "MFT-Zert-Gütesiegel " regarding the quality of practical year education (http://www.mft-zert.de/).
The university city, Göttingen, is situated right in the middle of Germany. It has approximately 133,000 inhabitants of which more than 33,000 are students. Its roots go back to a small village which was first mentioned in 953, today it is characterised by a creative flair and a unique atmosphere. With 13 faculties the Georg-August-University, founded in 1737, is well represented in nearly all scientific disciplines. More than 40 Nobel Prize winners are associated with its name.
