The St. Bernward Krankenhaus in Hildesheim is part of the largest catholic hospital and care group in Germany, the Elisabeth Vinzenz Verbund. Around 1,370 members of staff work together to provide care for more than 27,000 in- and 60,000 out-patients each year. The hospital houses 17 departments and four institutes.

A few additional dates and facts about the hospital: The hospital was founded in 1852, it sees more than 33,000 emergency cases each year, of which 16,000 patients are then treated on the wards. Between 1,400 and 1,500 babies are born here each year. Every day 1,000 samples are analysed, this means there are 1,300,000 analysis results every year. The hospital has 22 wards one of which is an intensive ward, one is an intensive ward for prematurely born babies, a monitoring ward and a palliative ward. There are 11 surgery theatres and four labour suites.

The hospital also has an affiliation with the Georg-August-Universität in Göttingen and acts as a teaching hospital (Akademisches Lehrkrankenhaus) that will accept German students during their practical year (Praktisches Jahr). Places are available in internal medicine, surgery, anaesthetics, gynaecology, urology, neurology and paediatrics. The St. Bernward Krankenhau was awarded the "MFT-Zert-Gütesiegel " a quality mark regarding the quality of practical year education (http://www.mft-zert.de/).
