The project concerns Samos island where thousands of asylum-seekers arrive fleeing from their country, and are kept on this island until their asylum process reaches a certain point, usually it takes 3 to 8 months. During their wait, new arrivals stay in a refugee camp, mostly in tents or in containers.
The centre provides free medical care for the refugee population, in an office located 700m from the camp. They have 5 consultation rooms, one triage room, one wound dressing room, one reception area, one pharmacy and one storage area.
The centre can refer patients to the hospital when they are in need of a specialist consultation, or to emergency room if urgent case. The resources on Samos are extremely low so the medics have to adjust they way of diagnosing and treating people to this.
The teamwork helps with this though, as well as the coordinators of the project who know the best how to refer patients and how to get more help for them, when possible.
