The medical institutions located in northern Peru are greatly understaffed and in great need of support. Further to this, a large proportion of the local population suffer from a lack of public health awareness, perpetuating health issues within families. In order to mitigate these issues, EcoSwell, a peruvian and UK registered for impact non profit, have launched this Electives and Medical Volunteering program. To date EcoSwell have impacted 3,000 people since 2013, and aim to improve the lives of 10,000 by 2021. Electives and medical volunteers would be contributing massively to the medical needs of this locality.
The Lobitos medical post is open until midday on most weekdays, and closed on weekends. It has been operating for at least 10 years. It mostly receives visits from low income families, people with respiratory issues, pregnant women and women with their children. You will be able to get involved in general medicine at this coastal rural setting which sometimes has to deal with emergencies as well. The public health challenges faced in the locality revolve around: sexual education, birth control, sanitation, prevention of viruses (flu, zika, dengue, chikungunya), amongst others. As part of this program, you will also have a chance to volunteer at the Talara General Hospital, getting a more holistic experience of the medical field in the developing world on both, a rural and an urban context.
